Brett - Director / Head Coach

Background

Brett has been part of freestyle skiing from its early days. Growing up skiing in Vermont and Montana, he moved to Gunstock as terrain parks were beginning to take off. With one of the first pairs of twin-tip skis, he became an early competitor in slopestyle and rail jam, earning his USSA competition license in the early 2000s and taking home wins and podium finishes in both sanctioned and unsanctioned events. Halfpipe was always his favorite.

Today

Today, Brett is a USSA 200-certified coach with more than 12 years of competition team coaching experience. He’s had the privilege of working with athletes through every stage of their development, watching them build skills, friendships, confidence, and a lifelong connection to the mountains. His athletes have gone on to win USASA Regional Series titles and earn podium finishes and championship titles at USASA Nationals. Most recently, he traveled to Nationals with his nine-year-old son to compete in slopestyle.

Brett is grateful to be part of the Gunstock Freestyle Academy community. He believes the combination of athletes, coaches, terrain parks, and team culture creates an environment where young skiers can thrive. It’s the kind of program he wishes he’d had growing up.

Back then, learning freestyle meant a group of friends figuring it out together—hitting rails, learning switch, experimenting with jump tricks, and working through the trial and error of mastering new skills. That experience shaped Brett’s coaching philosophy. Learning a trick requires more than simply attempting it; it means understanding the technique and breaking the process into manageable steps.

At GFA, Brett works to preserve that spirit of discovery and camaraderie while combining it with decades of collective experience to help athletes progress with greater confidence, purpose, and safety. The goal is to develop better skiers, great teammates, and athletes who love the process as much as the results.
